Passing On A Legal Legacy (Excerpts from Lawyers Weekly USA)

The name of Wisehart & Wisehart, painted on the front window of the one-story building which houses the law firm by that name, has looked out upon Middletown, Indiana’s Locust Street for some 50 years. Only recently, the firm’s name has remained somewhat of a misnomer. Robert F. Wisehart (father), 74, never practiced with his father (grandfather) who started the firm in 1891 and died in 1956 at the age of 87. The junior Wisehart returned to Middletown to practice law in 1954, six years after his father had retired.

Even though the senior Wisehart was not practicing, the son considered it only appropriate to include his father’s name on his new solo practice. The name would remain Wisehart & Wisehart ever since. But now, after 5 decades, the firm’s name is finally as it should be.

The rural, small-town Middletown practice is almost by definition a general practice. Robert says “We do a third trial law, a third family law and a third everything else.” “In a small town like this, one client walks in and you prepare a $25 deed, the next client walks in and you receive a $2,500 retainer for a million dollar divorce -there’s quite a range.”

“Practicing law in a small town like Middletown, provides rewards that aren’t always quantifiable, “Bob Wisehart says. For example, a few years ago, Bob handled a $900,000 estate left to the small 3,000 odd soul community. Her only instructions were to use the funds for the local library. Bob used the funds to replace the musty store-front one-room library with a 10,000 square foot modern facility with children’s reading rooms and community gathering spaces. Today, it is a centerpiece of community pride. “I like the satisfaction of helping people. The practice of law has been very good to me.”

Today, the Middletown, Indiana firm operates as Wisehart, Phillips & McCord.

“Integrity and pride in work-product are fundamental in all our engagements,” says the younger Frank Wisehart.

“Like my father, I enjoy helping people.”

The elder Robert Wisehart has an inner pride as his children continue in the legal community. “A guy told me this 50 years ago and I think it’s true today, “If you do good work, everything else will follow.”

This guiding principle has not been lost with Frank Wisehart. “Being around 100 years carries a certain pride and responsibility. I intend to live up to both.”
